Emergency Mental Health Educational Manual

This manual is written by the University of British Columbia, however; there are many facets here that will provide useful to those of us in the States. Mostly interesting to the the common layperson who is interested in psychology/psychiatry or the student, this manual is a well-thought out guide to how to help others when help is needed right now.

John Suler’s Teaching Psychology

This site is devoted to sharing ideas and resources for teaching clinical psychology, especially undergraduate courses on abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, group dynamics, psychological testing, and clinical components of introductory psychology. My orientation is mostly psychodynamic and humanistic, although all orientations are welcome. I originally developed this site in June of 1995 and periodically update it. So feel free to stop by again. I created many of these teaching activities and resources, although other instructors have generously contributed their ideas too.

American Association for Emergency Psychiatry

American Association for Emergency Psychiatry or AAEP is a multidisciplinary organization that serves as the voice of emergency mental health. The membership includes directors of psychiatric emergency services, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physician assistants, educators and other professionals involved in emergency psychiatry.

The Depravity Scale

Judges and juries both across the United States and in other countries who decide that a crime is “depraved,” “heinous,” or “horrible” can assign more severe sentences. Yet there is no standardized definition for such dramatic words that courts already use. And while we may all recognize that some crimes truly separate themselves from others, there is no standard, fair way to distinguish crimes that are the worst of the worst, or “evil.”

To minimize the arbitrariness of how courts determine the worst of crimes, and to eliminate bias in sentencing, the Depravity Scale research aims to establish societal standards of what makes a crime depraved, and to develop a standardized instrument based on specific characteristics of a crime that must be proven in order to merit more severe sentences.

This research will refine into the Depravity Standard, an objective measure based on forensic evidence. This instrument distinguishes not who is depraved but rather, what aspects of a given crime are depraved and the degree of a specific crime’s depravity. The research will enhance fairness in sentencing, given that it is race, gender and socio-economic blind.

The research has already been guided by legal and scientific study. Now, a two-part survey has been developed to involve the general public in establishing societal standards of what makes a crime depraved. The first part enables the general public to shape the specific intents, actions, and attitudes that should be included as items of the Depravity Standard instrument, and the second involves the general public in refining the relative weight of these items. In both surveys, all members of the general public are urged to participate. This is the first project ever developed that invites citizens’ direct input to forensic science research, and the first project ever developed in which citizens shape future criminal sentencing standards.

The aim of this ‘download’ is to present the basics of mental disorders. The target population is medical students, but general public readers may also find it useful. The mental disorders form a huge, mysterious and problematic body of knowledge. They also indicate a huge body of ignorance. The mental disorders represent a major challenge to contemporary science, government and humanity. When the less severe forms are included, more than 25% of the people in western populations will experience a mental disorder at some time in their lives.

PsychFutures

Since launching in September 2009, this community has rapidly grown to over 600 members from all over the world.

PsychFutures is an open network, albeit designed for individuals at various stages of their psychology career, from A-Level to degree-level to professionals. Primarily, we are about choosing your next step in psychology. For A-Level psychology students who are thinking about studying the subject at degree level, there’s advice on exam preparation and applying to university or college. For undergraduates thinking about post-degree options, our members provide peer-to-peer advice about postgrad psychology. For those looking beyond studying we have a section devoted to psychology careers.

As well as the aforementioned resources, members have access to our forum where they can: advertise books for sale; seek advice concerning their psychology research; recruit participants for their projects and debate on a range of psychology-related issues. In addition, members can contribute to our growing blog posts by publishing their own or by commenting on those already live.

The Refuge Media Project

The Refuge Media Project was created by filmmakers, health educators, and human rights activists concerned about this issue. We are producing a half-hour documentary on immigrant torture survivors in the United States, and on some of the individuals and organizations who are working to help survivors deal with their traumatic pasts, and with the sometimes traumatic experience of coming to America.
