Online Psychology Laboratory

Online Psychology Laboratory

The Online Psychology Laboratory (OPL) represents the first National Science Foundation funded entry for psychology in the National Science Digital Library. The APA Education Directorate also provides support for this project. OPL currently offers classic studies in psychology that students can participate in, and then analyze data from the experiences. As OPL continues to develop, new materials will be added to enhance learning about the discipline of psychology in high school, community colleges, and universities. You can search for materials using Keywords, Topic, and Method of Analysis. Keyword searches examine all fields and return results consistent with your search. You may also browse by topic; a broad listing of topics in psychology is displayed, allowing for a materials search within that area. Browsing by method allows for searches based on research methodology.

We also have hand-selected several bloggers to share their graduate school experiences with you. Our bloggers include current graduate students, a post doc and fellow, and an academic consultant to provide you with diverse perspectives from across the graduate school spectrum.

The PhD forums are another free resource we came up with to help connect past, current, and future grad students, providing you with an outlet to share your experiences and support one another. We’re also continuing to develop new tools to make your life a little easier (just remember to create a free account on our PhD People page to have full access to the tools!). For example, undergraduate and graduate students alike could benefit from submitting a question to Ask the PhDs, a Q&A column answered by faculty and industry PhDs about all facets of life in academia. Those who have completed grad school will especially want to check out our MyCV tool, which can eliminate the guesswork of formatting your curriculum vitae and increase your exposure by providing you with your personalized URL.

We could go on, but you probably get the idea: PhDStudent is a collection of diverse resources all packed into one site. We’re continually adding new articles and tools to stay up-to-date on the latest hot topics and trends in academia, so hopefully you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. Thanks for visiting, and see you around in the forums!

Raging Alcoholic

I assume alcoholism or problem drinking is affecting you in someway. A way you really aren’t happy about.

We’re here to give you information and access to resources. Following are a couple of facts about the problem.

  • It affects about 1 out of 13 adults in the United States.
  • Most studies say that over 50% of adults report having one or more close family members affected by the problem.
  • That 2/3 of Americans drink but, 10% of those who drink, drink over 50% of the alcohol.
  • That every problem drinker is expected to significantly impact at least 4 or 5 people.

There aren’t a lot of us but, we create some serious problems.

The Panic Center

A site dedicated to self-help and promoting communication between people with anxiety and their family doctor, includes information about panic and agoraphobia, a screening test for anxiety disorders and depression, an interactive self-guided 12-week cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) program for panic disorder and agoraphobia, as well as a moderated support group. A clean, well-designed site with a lot of straight-forward information that makes it easy for people to talk to their doctors about their concerns. The screening test even allows you to print out a note to hand to your doctor to help start the discussion.

Counselling Resource

I have had a few people on Psych Central Answers ask me about therapies online.  These people wanted to be able to access this kind of therapy without leaving their homes.  I was looking through Gareth’s archives, and found the “Counselling Resource,” which entails online therapy, counselling and mental health resources.

Hope this helps those at Psych Central Answers and here.
